Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec
Mileage: 27 mpg combined city/highway
Starting price: $52,675
The Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec has a diesel engine, which explains why it gets 27 mpg, according to Vincentric. As a rule, diesel engines get about 30% more miles per gallon than the same-size gasoline engine, as well as more torque, the twisting force that launches the car from a standing start. The engine is a 3.0-liter, 210-hp six-cylinder.
This car isn't for everyone, however: California, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, and Vermont won't register new diesels because those states have tougher emissions regulations than the federal standards. Next year, Mercedes-Benz plans to offer so-called "50-state" diesels.
